Reading enthusiasts and volunteers extraordinaire Irma and Bruce Kelley of Long Lake were honored guests
at Schumann Elementary for the kick-off to its Summer Reading Rocks program.
To Irma Kelley, reading with elementary students is all about adventure, imagination and pictures. But, as a retired teacher, she can’t help herself every now and then, and tries to sneak a phonics lesson in. But Orono Schumann Elementary students are pretty wise – even at their young age. One handsome young lad, in the politest of tones, once asked Kelley during a visit, “Are we done with this yet?”
Make no mistake, however, about how beloved Kelley and her husband, Bruce, are in Orono Schools. The Long Lake couple was honored as the 2012 recipients of the Orono Education Association Friend of Education Award. The award was presented during the Orono Schools’ annual recognition breakfast June 8.
The couple, with the help of the Orono Lions, created the R.E.D. (Read Every Day) Lions Challenge during February, which is I Love to Read Month. This year marked the 11th year of the program. Each first-grader who reads for 20 minutes every day during the month earns a $25 gift card to The Bookcase in Wayzata. The program has been so successful here that other Lions clubs throughout the nation have replicated it.
The Kelleys also organized Orono Reads for second-grade students who need extra support in reading. They found adult volunteers to visit once a week to read with one or two students. In addition, Bruce comes in once a week to work with a small challenge math group.
You don’t have to enter the school to see evidence of their volunteer efforts. Irma planted an A-Z hosta garden in front of Orono Schumann Elementary. Just prior to its major renovation, she took out all the plants and then replanted them once the renovation was complete.
The Friend of Education Award is presented to an individual or organization that has dedicated time and talents to the district’s schools and its students. It was first presented in 1988. An Orono Education Association member must initiate or endorse a nomination. The OEA Executive Board reviews nominations and decides who should receive the honor.

Below is a letter to Lion Presidents and Secretaries regarding newly launched Project New Hope retreats in downloadable format. Actual letter is posted after if you do not have a compatible browser.

Letter Content:
Greetings to all Lion Presidents and Secretaries,
WE NEED HELP!! We need each and every Lion in MD5M to help us get the word out about our Project New Hope retreats! We have a great product (our retreats) to offer but we need the marketing to get the consumers (veterans and families) to attend the retreats. Our retreats have proven time and time again that we are on the right track with the veterans. We have prevented at least one suicide and who knows how many others that we haven’t heard about directly. But, as you all know, even an excellent product does not sell itself. We need to all be on the lookout for veterans and families who may need our help. We need help contacting our local Clergy, medical providers and counselors to inform them about our program so they can refer people to us for help. We also need to inform veterans organizations such as Legion, VFW, DAV etc. so they can help us spread the word to vets they see who may be suffering. Also remember that we are not just talking about Iraq and Afghanistan but our Korea and Viet Nam vets may be still hurting also. If you don’t feel you can talk to a prospect find someone who can help you make the contact and explain the program.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is not a new problem, but it is getting more recognition and treatment. Many of our Viet Nam Veterans suffered from PTSD but had to do it in silence and help was not forthcoming. That has pretty much been corrected but much needs to be done in treating it and we can be that help in getting veterans and their families into programs if they will only come and let us into their lives for a week end retreat. Remember that the veterans may be in denial but the spouse, the parents, the grandparents, brothers, sisters, and friends all may be good people to help in getting them to our retreats.
The next retreat is scheduled for July 1-3 at Camp New Hope, PLEASE HELP US FILL IT WITH VETERANS AND FAMILY MEMBERS!! Thank you in advance for the help you all give to these wounded HEROES!!
SummerFest is coming up real soon so book your calendar before you forget! See attached link for a day to day schedule (June 21-25) at Long Lake, MN.

We are an organization that strives to make a positive difference in the community. As such, we collaborate on community building initiatives throughout the year and give back to the community more than just monetary goods, but also compassion which can be seen through hours upon hours of volunteering that accumulates throughout the year. Below are some results of our hard work.
Red Lions – Read Every Day – Program for 1st graders at Orono to promote the importance of reading. A $25 gift certificate was given to all students who read or are read to for one hour a day during the month of February, which is National Reading Month.
Adopt A Highway – The Orono Lions cover two stretches of roadways below and we have also adapted the Union Cemetery area.
And More Volunteering Hours  or Funds Given to:
This year was a huge success. We had 480 golfers and over 600 people attending the event. We would like to thank all of you who came and enjoyed our annual Snowball Open event. All the money raised will go back to the community in many forms to benefit the needy.
Special thanks to all the sponsors who had donated prizes, gift certificates, and the sponsors who worked a hole. Without you the attendee’s would not of had so much fun. Thanks.
A big thanks to the city of Long Lake and Orono Public Works who helped out with the Christmas trees and snow plowing. Also, the Cub Scouts Pack 206 did a great job helping as the clean up crew. We would like to personally thank all who had volunteered their time to set up and break down the tents, holes, and all the equipment.
Hopefully we are all still here for the next Snowball Open on Saturday, Jan. 28 2012 (10AM to 4PM).
We look forward to seeing you next year.
Bradley Hansen,
VP Orono Lions
